How To Find Success – It’s Easy But It’s Hard

You’ve struggled with your weight for years, you’ve tried every fad diet on the market and though you may have “lost” some weight it just seems to come back faster then it left.  So, how do you find success in a workout routine or a healthy lifestyle.  Here is a list of a few things that helped me to find weight loss success  over three years ago . . . and keep it off.

1.) Eat clean 90% of the time

I learned this from reading Tony Horton’s book “Bring It”.  It’s O.K. to let you guard down a bit.  A little.  My advice would be to get to your ideal weight and level of health before you try this strategy.  No one wants to hang out with the guy who carries his food in a little bag with him to a restaurant.  Live a clean and healthy lifestyle, but reward yourself on occasion.  I made it a point to find healthy or low calorie alternatives to the foods that I don’t want to completely give up (like peanut butter, chocolate and ice cream).  Instead of regular peanut butter I switched to natural peanut butter.  It’s healthier and I’ve learned to like it more than the old kind I used to buy.  Instead of having a chocolate bar I now exchange it for a Vita-muffin.  It’s a low calorie, high fiber chocolate muffin that would satisfy anyone’s chocolate addiction and my kids love them.  Instead of loading up on high fat, high calorie ice cream I usually make an occasional stop at the local frozen yogurt shop for a no-sugar add, low calorie yogurt with fresh strawberry and blueberry toppings.   The point is to make choices in moderation and find delicious alternative that want ruin your diet.  Eat healthy foods that taste good and that you like to eat.

2.) Find an exercise routine that you love

When you workout you should feel energized.  Working out should be something that you look forward to accomplishing everyday.  It should be something that you can’t miss . . . no matter what.  Before I found Beachbody products I was a gym rat.  I worked out at least three times or more a week and ran on the other days.  But guess what?  My weight and my waist kept getting bigger and bigger.  I knew that I had to make a lifestyle change.  After finding something that worked for me and I saw success and progress, I couldn’t get enough.  That something started with P90X in March 2009 and has progressed to P90X 2, Insanity, Insanity the Asylum, Body Beast and now Les Mills Pump.  I wanted more and wanted to keep mixing things up.  I enjoy creating hybrids with all of the workouts I have to keep things fresh and challenging.

3.) SLEEP!!

I’ve mentioned this before, but getting enough sleep is one of my biggest challenges.  Not necessarily because I don’t have time, its that I hate to sleep.  I know it sounds strange but I can find so much more I’d rather do than sleep.  Since I wake up every morning at 4:30 to workout I try to get at least 6 + hours a night.  For me, that’s usually enough and I wake up feeling refreshed and ready to start my day.

4.) Relax – Have a quiet time

Having 2 young kids, busy job and more daily responsibility then I can count, not getting overly stressed about everyday life takes practice.  For me it starts when I wake up in the morning and spend time praying and reading my Bible or daily devotion.  Starting everyday with a quiet time and improving my relationship with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has made all the difference in my life.  It keeps me centered, balanced and ready to face any difficult situation.  Work, drama, ball games, traffic, maintenance, meetings, dead lines or your job all can be stressful or get you all distracted.

5.) Enjoy Life!

Spend time with your family, take an unusual vacation, find things that challenge you, create a “bucket list”, surprise your spouse with a weekend get away.  Do something that’s creative and excites you.  The list could go on and on.  It doesn’t even have to be expensive.  Use your imagination. When you are being active, spending time with family and friends, you’ll be in a better mood and will feel better overall.

It’s easy, but it’s hard.

The majority of people know what it takes to loss weight and live a healthy lifestyle, they just refuse to attempt it.  What derails them is life getting in the way and the choices that are made along the way.  It’s easy to know we should eat veggies and fruit and non processed foods.  It’s hard to stay on track since veggies are not sold in a vending machine or easily purchased through a drive through window.  We can make it easier by doing some simple planning ahead; having a good schedule and being prepared with good food choices.
