Negative attitudes and excuses

Follow Me on PinterestPin It

Since I posted my transformation video from my P90X/Insanity/1 on 1 hybrid I have heard mostly positive feedback, with an occasional negative comment.  The positive feed back is usually in the form of congratulations or that my video has inspired them to get serious about taking control of their own health.  But, the other side of that is the negative comments from some people stating that there is no way they could accomplish what I have done.  Instead of focusing on  what they CAN do to get themselves in shape, they dwell at thinking of all of the reasons they may fail, get  discouraged, and usually end up quitting the program before they even start.  I know this is true because it used to be me.  I had to get to a point where I was willing to change.  I had to change mentally before I could really change physically.  When I committed to start P90X, I made a decision that nothing was going to stop me from achieving my goal.  What was my goal, you ask?  Lose 10 lbs.  The funny thing is, I lost 10lbs. in the first 3 weeks of the program.  From there I was on a mission to be as healthy and fit as I could be.  Sadly, people don’t quite understand the importance of positive thinking or how to learn from their mistakes. On top of that, they will make every  excuse in the book for not starting or for why they may have failed. If you want to succeed, get rid of the  excuses and push yourself to succeed!

Here are a couple of the common excuses that I hear:

1.) “I don’t have time to do the workouts.”  To be honest, this is the  oldest excuse in the book, and it is not acceptable.  The bottom line is that nobody has time.  You have to make time because it’s important to you.  Funny, people didn’t have time before face book, now they spend hours a day on it.  It took a little time for me to figure out that I was not just making time for my workouts, I was making time to improve my health and the way that I felt.  Once you make your workouts your priority, you find out that you have more time available than you originally thought.  I have found that the time that works best for me is 4:30 in the morning.  WOW, three years ago you would never hear me say that!!  Now, I love working out in the morning.  I have more energy throughout the day and I have no more excuses to prevent me from working out.  Trust me there is not much going on to distract you that early in the morning.  Find the time that is best for you.  It may be the same time every day or it may change depending on the day.  Just keep pushing play!!

2.) “The diet is too hard.” If you want to get into excellent shape, you must commit to the nutrition plan. You can do anything you set your mind to.  Honestly, the diet plan was the easiest part of the program for me.  The more I followed the plan the better my workouts got and the more weight that I lost.  Do you think it was easy for me to  completely change the way I fueled my body? No, but I did it anyways because I knew  it’s what I had to do to succeed and get the results I wanted.  In the end, I realized I loved the new food I was eating.  I could eat more of it, with less guilt, more energy and it tasted great.  The energy I have now has no comparison to the tired, run down person I used to be.  I promise, knowing what I know now, I would not go back to my old diet, EVER.

3.) “I don’t want to lose too much weight.”  What? This is the one excuse that has never made sense to me.  People not wanting to do P90X, Insanity or any other workout program because it might make them to thin.  I weight 19o, with 8% body fat and I’ve completed these workouts numerous times over the last 3 years.  Too skinny, I don’t think so . . . by the way, most people that make this excuse are overweight and out of shape.  Go figure.

Excuses lead to failure. If you want to succeed, you must maintain a  positive attitude and truly believe that you can accomplish anything you  set your mind to….because you can! Start paying close attention to how many times you hear yourself make excuses during the day and make a conscious effort to banish them from your thought process.  If you are going through the program and not seeing  the results you want, don’t give up like most people do. It just means  that you may have to make a few adjustments to keep the results coming!  There was a two week period during my first round of P90X that I didn’t lose a pound.  I went back and read the nutrition guide and realized I wasn’t eating enough.  You heard me right, I had to eat to lose weight.  When I increased my calorie intake I lost 4 lbs in each of the next two weeks.

Nowadays, I’m always trying to think positive, which is the reason I know I will continue to be successful in achieving my fitness goals as well as anything else I do! If you aren’t a positive thinker, you need  to start.  When I coached high school football I used to tell my players, “You can correct a mistake, but you can’t correct an excuse.”  Banish those negative thoughts and excuses and the results and success will follow!!
