Don’t Skip Breakfast!!

We’ve all heard it before, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” and according to a recent survey from Food Insight, 93 percent of Americans agree that breakfast is the most important meal, yet fewer than half (44 percent) are eating it every day.  I understand, not everyone is a breakfast person.  Some people can wait until noon before they eat anything.  But, we all know this isn’t the best practice for your health and fitness. For those of us who workout in the morning, finding time to eat beforehand can be difficult.  But should you do P90X before breakfast?  The answer isn’t cut and dry. While you don’t have to have a whole meal before your workout, getting something on your stomach is a good idea.  CLICK HERE to read my article, “Pre-Workout Meal” for suggestions.

People who skip breakfast are just as likely to carry extra weight as those who chow down on bacon and eggs every morning, according to a new study by researchers at the University of California at Berkeley.  The study found that non-breakfast eaters and meat and egg eaters typically weigh more than those who tend to eat other foods for breakfast. “Skipping breakfast has already been established as a risk factor for being overweight, but our study is the first to really look at how different breakfast types may affect weight while controlling for lifestyle and demographic variables,” said Coralie Brown, co-author of the research paper and a graduate student at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health at the time of the study. The number of obese adults has also grown, jumping from 23 percent in 1994 to 31 percent in 2000, according to statistics from the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention.  “More and more Americans are skipping breakfast as the pace of our lives becomes increasingly hectic,” noted Gladys Block, a UC Berkeley professor of nutritional epidemiology and principal investigator of the study.  “What our study shows is that if the goal is to lose or maintain weight, skipping breakfast is not a good way to go about it.Fuel for the Fire

When you do any workout, you are burning glycogen, or energy stores.  This happens whether you have eaten or not.  But it makes more sense that you would have greater energy after consuming calories.  For the same reason that experts recommend children eat breakfast before school, you should eat something before your workout.  Even if it’s just a protein bar, something on your stomach will help you power through P90X, Insanity or Chalean Extreme before breakfast.

Eat Something Good!

Not just tasty—but eat something that’s good for you. There are many options available for people who don’t want to eat a full meal but just need to have a little something before their before breakfast workout. Try:

  • Whey Protein Shake
  • P90X Peak Performance Protein Bars
  • Peanut Butter on Whole Wheat Toast or waffles
  • Sliced Apples and Peanut Butter or Greek Yogurt
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Handful of Almonds and a Lara Bar

It doesn’t take much to take the edge off your hunger, and bacon and eggs are definitely not recommended.

Food to Feel Better

P90X and other Beachbody workouts are strenuous and without anything on  your stomach, there’s a pretty decent chance that they could leave you feeling pretty bad. Your body requires nourishment and hydration to work properly.  This is why it’s important to drink water and consume calories in the first place, but especially in the morning—to “break” your “fast”.  Working out before breakfast is okay as long as you still get some sort of sustenance in you before you begin your workout. Drink a big glass of water upon rising and have a protein bar while you are getting your workout clothes on.

Morning Workouts Are a Great Beginning to the Day

When you start your day with some food, water, and a workout like P90X, you are really starting it on the right foot.  Like I mentioned above, studies have shown that breakfast eaters are less likely to be overweight.  By including a meal in your morning ritual with your P90X or other workout, you’ll have more energy for your day and feel better from the jump.
