Sugary Drinks

I know I’ve shared before about the dangers of sugary drinks but this article was too good not to pass along.

By April Daniels Hussar, SELF Magazine

Drinking diet soda has already been linked to weight gain, but now, a new study finds that sugary beverages could be seriously bad for your heart and put you at risk for developing diabetes … even if you’re slim and fit.

Presented at the American Heart Association’s meeting in Orlando, Fla. on Sunday, the study finds that tossing back two or more sugary drinks a day may increase a woman’s risk for heart disease and diabetes — even if it doesn’t make her gain weight.

Women in the study who drank two or more sugary beverages per day were four times more likely to develop high triglyceride levels than women who downed fewer super-sweet drinks. They were also were more likely to develop abnormal levels of fasting glucose, a possible sign of diabetes.

What’s more, even when women in the study who drank two or more sugary concoctions a day didn’t gain weight, they still turned out to have higher amounts of belly fat, which poses a greater cardiovascular risk than other types of fat. (Beware the muffin top.)

Kids Adding Sugar
Sigh. So what are we supposed to drink … WATER?

Well, yes, enough to stay hydrated. But, of course, sometimes what we really want is a nice, refreshing glass of sparkling sweetness, or a hot cup of syrupy, caffeinated goodness. What’s a girl to do?

In addition to our old friend H2O, Rachel Berman, RD, Director of Nutrition for CalorieCount.com, recommends drinking unsweetened tea (make it iced and add some mint leaves or a few slices of citrus for extra flavor), seltzer water and low-sodium vegetable juices in place of sugary drinks.

Our personal faves? We love sparkling water with a twist of lime and/or a splash of no-sugar-added fruit juice, and fruit-infused water (just add some fruit slices and cucumber to a pitcher of water, put it in the fridge and wait a couple of hours … voila! Spa-worthy refreshment.)

If you’re feeling a wee bit more ambitious, Berman gave us two delish recipes for drinks that will satisfy your sweet tooth without putting your heart in peril.
