Whole Grain vs. Multi Grain

Question:
Multi grain vs. whole grain: Which is healthier?

I’m trying to eat a healthy diet. Is multi-grain the same thing as whole grain? Which is the healthier choice?  I used to ask this question alot and now its one that I get asked alot.  So, I decide to share with you some thoughts on multi grain vs. whole grain.

Answer:

Multi-grain and whole grain are not interchangeable terms.  Topping the list of most annoying things food marketers do is their sneaky tactic of turning words that sound healthy against us.  Whole grain means that all parts of the grain kernel including wheat and corn are used to make the product.  That’s good, because the process of refining grains, to make white bread, for example, actually strips out the vast majority of the nutrients, leaving behind only empty calories.  In contrast, multi-grain means that a food contains more than one type of grain; it doesn’t tell you whether they’re whole or refined grains, or a mix of both.  It’s possible that two or more grains went into the product after they were refined and stripped of all their nutritional value.

Whole-grain foods are a healthy choice because they contain nutrients, fiber and other healthy plant compounds found naturally in the grain. Look for products that list the first ingredient as “whole grain,” “whole wheat” or “whole oats.” Healthy adults should eat at least three 1-ounce equivalents of whole grains a day as part of a balanced diet.
