Aging Gracefully?

Follow Me on PinterestPin It

You can’t stop it, you can’t slow it down, it’s a fact of life . . . we are getting older.

As we get older our mobility slows, agility, speed, balance, and range of motion begin to worsen.  This year (May 2015) I’ll be 41 years old and although some things in my life have diminished, overall I’m in the best shape of my life, much better than I could ever imagined just 5 years ago thanks to P90X.  My only regret is that I wish I had started a healthier lifestyle at 25 instead of 35.

So, what do you do when age starts to catch up with you?  Can you actually improve with age?  I believe through personal experience that you can, even into your 50′, 60’s, 70’s and beyond.

Our goal should be to get healthy and fit; it shouldn’t be a roller coaster ride of gaining and losing, crash diets, and making excuses.  Take a look at these fitness rules, if you will take them seriously they can help you slow or even reverse the aging process, no matter what level of fitness you’re starting at.

  1. Variety: This is key for anyone.  Falling into the same routine (like I did for over 20 years) will result in a lack of motivation and limited results.  Changing your routine not only keeps things fresh but allows your body to constantly keep adjusting.  The results is a happier you and a body that responds quickly to your new workouts.  Work on your strengths and the things you love, but also add in things you’re weaker at.  One of Tony Horton’s many quotes is “Variety is the spice of fitness.”
  2. Consistency: Ask anyone who is fit and health and they will tell you that they work at it every day.  Being healthy is a choice and it’s a lifestyle.  Make your goal 5-6 times a week, 6 is best.  “If you don’t like starting over, then stop giving up.”
  3. Intensity: Push play everyday and don’t be satisfied with going through the motions.  Workout with intensity but make sure you have good form, you pay attention to what you’re doing, and don’t train to get hurt.
  4. Purpose: What’s your WHY?  Is it to slow the aging process?  Do you want to be able to chase the kids, do you want to feel better, what do you WANT for your future? Right it down and post it where all of your family and friends can see it.  Constantly remind yourself of why you want to be a better you!
  5. Planning: I suggest working out at the same time every day and have a meal plan in place before you start, one where you will eat at least 5 to 6 times a day.  Remember… Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

The most important part of aging gracefully is to eat clean and exercise regularly.  Skip the fad diets and workout gadgets, I’m constantly telling people don’t do anything that you would do for the rest of your life.  Diets have an end and 1 gadget will bore you and will probably not give you the results it’s advertisers promised.  Change your thinking, you’re making a lifestyle change, If you change your way of thinking, all of this becomes automatic just like breathing. You won’t question it, you won’t have to think about it anymore, it becomes habit.

Make today the first day of the rest of your life.
