Cough, cough, sniff, sniff . . . Ahhh the sounds of fall.  If your like me you’ve heard those sounds a lot lately.  As the weather begins to cool and the leaves begin to turn you can’t help but hear those awful sounds.   That’s right, it’s that time of year when people start to feel a little under the weather, head to the doctor’s office for some high-powered medicine or stock up on the “over the counter” meds to get them through the winter.  But, does it have to be that way?  Not necessarily, because you see the average American doesn’t eat foods that can naturally and safely prevent you from getting sick.  Just think about the last few days and the particular meals you ate, did you get enough fruits and veggies, enough fiber, protein, vitamin (from food, not pills).  If you eat like the typical American you probably ate meals that were high in fat, calories and ingredients that won’t prevent sickness but may actually cause it.  So, what do you need to do to get started to build up your immune system.

How to Naturally Boost Immune System

Your immune system is a shield within your body that keeps out infections and sickness. When your body is healthy, it is able to combat the common cold, other viruses and infections.  However, when your immune system is not supported because of your poor health habits, lack of sleep, or any number of things, those viruses and infections can attack your body, causing you to get ill. There are many things you can do to naturally boost immune system function. Making these suggestions apart of your daily routine will help you avoid your yearly cold and fight off the flu!

1.)  Eat Healthy!

If you eat highly processed foods, refined carbohydrates and sugars, your immune system isn’t getting the fuel it needs to fight off sickness.  Fresh fruits and vegetables especially, give your immune system vital nutrients it needs to protect your body from disease and illness.   Did you know that every time you eat the foods you put in your body are directly feeding your cells every time you eat! Do you think your blood cells, skin cells, etc. can thrive off of white sugar, fried foods, and the sodium in canned products? No. The fuel that comes from fresh vegetables and fruit is a natural immune booster.  Every time you eat one of these  fruits and veggies, garlic, onions, citrus fruit, yogurt, ginger and honey, your cells are able to maintain their own health and therefore fight off infections and illness.

2.)  Daily Exercise!

Your entire body depends on you being active.  The more you move, the more blood flow throughout the body, the better your body heals.  If you live a sedentary lifestyles than your body’s will be sedentary. And it isn’t just your butt that will get lazy, it’s every system of your body. If you aren’t able to get off the couch and get in a workout, what makes you think your immune system is going to work properly. To boost immune system with exercise, all you need to do is stay active. Workout regularly and don’t spend all day sitting on your butt.  Find a workout program that works for you and your schedule.  Here are some suggestions: P90X, P90X 2, Insanity, The Asylum Vol 1, The Asylum Vol 2, Focus: T25, Body Beast, Les Mills Pump and Turbo Fire.  All of these programs come with a workout plan, nutrition guide and support from a Beachbody coach like myself.

3.) Supplement!

Nutritional supplements are designed to fill in the gaps and provide you with important vitamins and minerals you may not be getting in your nutrition plan. Because none of us have the perfect diet, supplementing allows us to get the benefits we might be missing out on.  To boost immune system function, a supplement like Beachbody’s Herbal Immune Boost can deliver the vitamins and minerals you might be missing out on. This supplement contains things like:

  • Astragulus Root
  • Codnopsis
  • Ganoderma
  • Siler Root
  • Licorice Root
  • And several other natural ingredients

If you want to stay healthy, fit and ward off sickness and disease, then feeding your immune system and keeping it functioning at full speed should be a top priority!
