Food Grazing?

cowsO.K., I have to admit it . . . I’m a food grazer.  A what?  A food grazer!!  What is that?  Well, I’m glad you asked.  For the typical American, eating three meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner is pretty normal.  It’s normal because most Americans have this mindset that if you eat more than three meals a day you’re going to gain weight.  Now I can’t deny if you’re eating 4 or 5 calorie packed meals and snacks a day that you will probably gain weight.  However, eating the right kinds of foods at the right times can make a huge difference in your waistline.

What are the benefits of Food Grazing?

1.) Keeps you feeling full between meals.  Making the right food choices (200-300 calories) between meals can keep you from overeating during your main meals such as lunch and supper.

2.) Boosts your metabolism.  Eating smaller, healthier meals every 2 to 3 hours can keep your metabolism revving and help you burn more calories throughout the day instead of eating every 6 to 7 hours and you body slowly shutting down.

3.) Fuels your body throughout the day.  Since I workout in the morning before work, eating every 2 to 3 hours allows me to help my body recover and fuel it all day long.

What are the drawbacks of Food Grazing?

1.) Not allow your food to properly digest.  If you eat too often your food will not digest properly and your body will not get the nutrients it needs to function properly.

2.)  Easily eat too many calories if you aren’t careful.  Eating every 2 to 3 hours doesn’t mean you eat whatever you can find.  This can cause overeating and unwanted weight gain.

3.) Finding the right variety.  I’ll admit it, I eat a boring diet so it doesn’t bother me to eat similar meals over and over.  However, not everyone is like me so for some the difficulty will be in finding multiple healthy foods to eat 5 to 6 times a day.  If you’re looking for variety, click the nutrition tap above and you’ll find my shopping list, recipes for all meals and snacks.
