Les Mills Pump – Review

My Les Mills Pump Review

Les Mills Pump is an awesome workout!  However, I have to admit that when I first saw the infomercial it didn’t look like the workout for me.  Instead I bought P90x 2 (another workout I love) and forgot about Les Mills Pump.  A few months back I decided to give it a try and I haven’t regretted it.

Les Mills Pump — Overview

When I first got the workout I completely underestimated how difficult it was, so the first thing I did was head to the store and buy 25 lb plates.  Five minutes into the first workout and I was pulling the 25’s off immediately, those 10’s and 5’s didn’t sound so bad after all.  I have been impressed with the pace and speed of these workouts.

LMP came with a 90 day calender but after looking it over and previewing the workouts I decided to create my own hybrid using LMP and Insanity: The Asylum Volume 2.  However, most people will do fine with the calender.  If you buy the Ultimate Kit, it comes with 3 additional workouts and at the end of the LMP fitness guide it contains a 30 Day Ultimate Cross Training Hybrid calender, this is for those looking for a challenge right out of the box.

Les Mills Pump  — Get Ready for the PUMP!

During Month 1 the shorter workouts might be too easy for some.  These workouts burn a lot of calories but are approximately 30 minutes.  The Month 2 and 3 workouts are longer and much tougher!  There are 3 lift circuits that are all between 45 min and 55 min, and will have get your heart rate up and have you dripping in sweat in no time.  These workouts featured in Month 2 and 3 are the main ones that I used for my hybrid.  These were my favorites.

Les Mills Pump — What makes it so fun?

I love high intensity exercises at a non-stop pace.  The workouts have some old school music from the 80’s and 90’s that help push you through and provides a great atmosphere to workout in.  The variety in the workouts also makes it fun and keep the workouts unique and constantly changing.  If you like working out to a cast of beautiful people with Swedish and British accents and high energy music, then LMP is where you want to be.  PUMP will definitely make you WANT to push play!

Les Mills Pump — The Workouts

Most Pump workouts use a barbell and weights.  With the deluxe kit, you get 2 cardio workouts and a plyo step.  The “Step” cardio workout was more difficult than I thought.  The “Combat” was more like a Kenpo-type workout.  The abs/core workout is a great workout, but if you’ve done P90X or Insanity, its not what you’ve come to expect.  I prefer some of the other ab workouts I’ve done.  The best workouts in this program (in my opinion) are the longer lift workouts (Extreme, Revolution and Pump & Shed) and the step cardio workout is intense in its own right.

Les Mills Pump — Improving Your Fitness Level

Pump is highly adaptable to whatever your fitness level is.  Someone who is new to working out can spend time with the shorter workouts and get their fitness level up, burn calories, and have a blast.  Those who are already in good shape, whether through P90X or Insanity, can move to the longer workouts and really push themselves.  The ability to add or drop weight can make any of the workouts as hard as you want.  You can literally do these workouts next to someone who has little or no workout experience and both get an awesome workout at the same time simply by the amount of resistance you are using to do the exercises.  In my opinion that’s what makes this workout great for anybody and I mean anybody.

Les Mills Pump — The Equipment / Weights

The amount of weights that come with the kit are plenty for most people in the beginning, however, an experienced lifter will find they they will progress very quickly and need to add weight to all exercises.

For me, I add some extra weight.  I’d recommend to anyone wanting to get an extra set of weights, or some heavier plates to add resistance, to look on E-Bay or go to their sporting goods store.  I bought 25 lb plates at Wal-Mart.  I have found that with a curl bar, some 25 lb plates and 10 lb plates, I can get all the workout I can handle.  The Pump kit doesn’t come with 25 lb plates of it’s own, but those big strong guys who want the extra weight can get some plates to add to their set.   They are standard 1″ diameter (not the Olympic size 2″ diameter).

LES MILLS PUMP is  the first-ever at-home version of BODYPUMP —the incredibly popular series of gym classes created by Les Mills International and taught in 80 countries across the globe.

How does LES MILLS PUMP work? — It’s all about THE REP EFFECT.  Unlike traditional strength workouts, which feature heavy weights that add bulk, this program features light-to moderate weights (kit includes barbell and 2 – 5’s and 2 – 10’s) used at a higher rate of repetition.  The constantly changing tempo, body position, and speed of THE REP EFFECT breaks down more fat reserves, targets more muscle fibers, and burns more calories than traditional weight training.  In some of the longer workouts you will perform over 800 reps.

What can I expect for the LES MILLS PUMP workouts? — Muscles reach fatigue by performing 70-100 repetitions per body part.  That’s about 4 times more reps than one would typically perform in a standard gym workout.  All of the body part tracks are approximately 5 minutes long.

Can I really workout only 3 times a week?  — The fitness guide suggest that on your off days that you engage in non-resistance training workouts (such as cardio or cross-training).  The Ultimate kit also includes workouts like FLOW (Yoga) and STEP, which will be great to supplement on the non lifting days.

Who should do this program?
• People of all ages and fitness levels
• Men and women who want to lose weight and get fit
• People who want leaner, stronger muscles
• Those new to working out• Women who are afraid of getting bulky from lifting weights
• Fans of BODYPUMP gym classes who like to work out at home
